Grey Headed Flying Fox
(ornithorhynchus anatinus)
Grey Headed Flying Foxes are found in mostly coastal environments from central Queensland to Victoria and rarely west of the Great Dividing Range. The Grey Headed Flying Fox is the world's largest flying mammal and is distinguished by its size and ginger band around the back of it's neck.
The Grey Headed Flying Fox feed within fifteen kilometres of their roosting spot, but tagged flying foxes have been found up to one thousand kilometres from where they were tagged. When flying they can reach up to thirtyfive kilometers per hour.
Grey Headed Flying Foxes are common but loss of habitat and global warming remain a concern. Communications are complicated and they are very social. Predators include pythons, goannas and birds of prey. Its territory is often shared with Black and Little Red Flying Foxes.
