Wildlife Tours - June 2008
This is always an interesting month for a number of reasons. First of all we saw the Humpback Whales return & we haven't missed them once. The weather has been perfect for watching them breaching, tail & flipper slapping & a couple of times within 200mtrs of the coast. Some of the pods have had over 20 Whales. It does seem like their numbers are increasing over the last decade. Dolphins are also putting on a great show surfing & coming in close to beach, we even saw them under the bridge in Ballina, about 1km inland.
We've managed to spot Echidnas on 3 separate occassions, generally on rainy or overcast days. Winter is their breeding season & they prefer the cold weather so it's the best time of year to catch them waddling around.
We saw our 1st baby Koala for the year, no fur on the chin yet, also had a big male bellowing in the tree above us. Also a quite large Carpet Snake in the Rainforest. Another quite rare occurance was to view Kangaroos, Whiptail & Red Necked Wallabies feeding together. An Emu is turning up about 80% of the time & the Noisy Pittas (exotic bird) have also been spotted. Wedgetail Eagles have also been hanging around alot. A very interesting month & the next 2 or 3 should be much the same, the weather is probabley at it's best around here in winter.
